Sample of projects previously undertaken by Mackey Plant Construction:

Birr Castle Bridge – Birr Scientific Heritage Foundation

This bridge being a rare surviving example of a multi-wire cable suspension bridge is of great historical interest as an example of early suspension bridge construction. Built between 1821 and 1825, this single-span wire suspension footbridge spans the River Camcor inside the grounds of Birr Castle. It is hung on uprights made of reinforced concrete, anchored by two diagonal wrought-iron rods to the earth behind and it has a wood deck spanning across.

With Mackey Plants expertise and experience this bridge was fully refurbished to bring it back to its original function and a complete coating system was applied. As well as the restoration of the bridge Mackey Plant Construction carried out stone masonry works. The pictures below show the bridge before and after the restoration.

Sallins Pedestrian Cycle Bridge, Grand Canal Greenway – John Craddocks Ltd & Kildare County Council

Mackey Plant undertook the complete design, fabrication, coating and installation of this pedestrian bridge.

This is a complex curve bridge including stainless steel mesh railings. With the expertise and experience of Mackey Plant Construction the pedestrian bridge was completed in accordance with EN1090 Execution Class 3 and the result is shown in the pictures supplied below.

Bilberry to Waterford boardwalk – John Craddocks Ltd & Waterford County Council

A 300-meter boardwalk over the River Suir in Waterford. This was a complex project due to the tight space and working over a tidal river. The main cranked beams were cast into the road and extended out over the river.

Mackey Plan fabricated the decking and the architectural railings including the timber handrails while making sure no discharge of fluids, residues or any deleterious material polluted the river.  With the expertise and experience of Mackey Plant Construction the boardwalk was completed in accordance with EN1090 Execution Class 3 and the result is shown in the pictures supplied below.

The bridge c.1852 is listed as an Architectural Heritage Bridge and is identified by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) as an integral component of the mid nineteenth-century civil engineering heritage on account of the connections with the country-wide programme of famine relief drainage works completed under the Drainage (Ireland) Act, 1846.

Restoration and conservation repairs of two significant protected national heritage footbridges listed in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). A specialist high quality corrosion protection system was employed.

Bridge 1 – Single-spire wire suspension footbridge, built c. 1840 over the river Camcor.

This bridge being a rare surviving example of a multi-wire cable suspension bridge is of great historical interest as an example of early suspension bridge construction and also on account of its association with the Mountmellick Foundry. The historical structure of the bridge demonstrates the emerging form of the suspension bridge at the time of construction in early to mid-nineteenth century (the art of engineering).

Bridge 2 – Single-span Metal lattice footbridge c. 1900.

This bridge is of technical interest owing to its lattice girder construction.

Repair, rehabilitation and reinstallation of single span heritage bridge including dismantling and removal offsite.

Cork’s iconic Shakey Bridge (Daly’s bridge) c.1926 remains the only suspension bridge in Cork City and is the only surviving bridge of its type in Ireland. It’s included on the Record of Protected Structures, the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage and is considered a significant contributor to the architectural heritage of the city

The Bridge was among those commended at the 2021 Structural Awards by the Institution of Structural Engineers. This programme celebrates the very best work across the global structural engineering community. The repair and rehabilitation of Cork’s Daly’s Bridge was commended by the judges in the Award for Structural Heritage category. They felt that it was an amazing job to bring the bridge back to its original glory whilst maintaining its signature ‘shake’ .
